VAT Basics
Value Added Tax (VAT) in Thailand is 7% and applies to the sale of goods and services. Most freelancers start exempt but must register once they exceed certain thresholds.
The 1.8 Million THB Threshold
You must register for VAT if your annual turnover exceeds 1,800,000 THB.
What Counts as Turnover?
- Gross income from services
- Sales of goods
- Before any expense deductions
Timeline:
Register within 30 days of exceeding the threshold.Voluntary Registration
You can register for VAT even below the threshold if:
- Your clients prefer working with VAT-registered suppliers
- You want to claim input VAT credits
- You're building toward the threshold
How VAT Works for Freelancers
Collecting VAT (Output Tax)
Add 7% VAT to your invoices:- Service fee: 100,000 THB
- VAT (7%): 7,000 THB
- Invoice total: 107,000 THB
Claiming VAT (Input Tax)
Recover VAT paid on business expenses:- Office supplies: 10,700 THB (including 700 THB VAT)
- You can claim back the 700 THB
