VAT Basics

Value Added Tax (VAT) in Thailand is 7% and applies to the sale of goods and services. Most freelancers start exempt but must register once they exceed certain thresholds.

The 1.8 Million THB Threshold

You must register for VAT if your annual turnover exceeds 1,800,000 THB.

What Counts as Turnover?

  • Gross income from services
  • Sales of goods
  • Before any expense deductions

Timeline:

Register within 30 days of exceeding the threshold.

Voluntary Registration

You can register for VAT even below the threshold if:

  • Your clients prefer working with VAT-registered suppliers
  • You want to claim input VAT credits
  • You're building toward the threshold
